Whether you’re new to Korean cuisine or looking for a new go-to during Best Restaurant Week, East Bay favorite Bowl’d BBQ is here for you.
From classic Bibimbap to our favorite Korean Fried Chicken, Sisters Chi Moon and Jessica Oh developed Bowl’d with the goal of demystifying and educating people on different aspects of Korean food and its communal nature. Their mom works right alongside them, developing all of the restaurant’s dishes, and training the staff. Therefore, it isn’t surprising to hear that the coolest cooking experience they’ve ever received was from their mom:
“There are debates about this, my mom taught me: the best way of measuring the perfect amount of water to cook rice, regardless of portion, is to lay your hand flat on top of the rice and fill the bowl with water just a little past your knuckles“.
Not sure where to start? You can’t go wrong with Bibimbap — Chi Moon’s favorite Korean dish. This all-in-one meal translates to “mixed rice,” and includes your choice of protein — plus spinach, mushrooms, julienned carrots, bean sprouts, and more. And the pièce de résistance, a perfectly fried egg on top.
So what’s the one dish that the sisters will always try if they see it on a menu?
“Kimchi. The process of making Kimchi is laborious, but with that comes many opportunities to be creative with the recipe. For example, our Kimchi is made with apples and oranges, giving it a natural sweet taste. I would judge other Kimchis by its uniqueness — my favorite is my mom’s yogurt Kimchi!”
